EGGS

The eggs we use in our products are fresh, category A and from free-range hens.

The path and freshness of our eggs is strictly controlled, we activate more than 12,000 controls a year. Therefore the eggs are rigorously selected according to very strict quality standards. The hens are fed only with vegetable feed without artificial coloring and come from selected and controlled farms. For our products we have chosen to use only eggs from free-range hens, in conditions that are more respectful of their natural needs.

 

 

SUGAR

Even from the sweetest ingredient we seek only the best for our products. All the sweetness of the sugar used in our factories

comes from the best certified Italian and foreign supply chains, whose quality we check. The best known sources of sucrose worldwide are beetroot and sugar cane, both of which are used in our products.

 

 

COCOA AND CHOCOLATE

To make our products tastier, our experts select and identify cocoa and chocolate suppliers who are able to ensure compliance with our principles of social responsibility and sustainability.

In Africa, we visited most of the cocoa and chocolate processing sites used in our products. All the suppliers visited comply with the requirements of the Barilla “Code of Conduct” which incorporates the standards of the SA 8000 certification or similar certifications.

Since 2008, 100% of those who produce our cocoa and chocolate-based ingredients are members of the WCF (World Cocoa Foundation): an organization that, through shared development projects, aims to connect producing countries with countries users to define and guarantee processing standards with particular attention to working conditions.

WITHOUT HYDROGENATED FATS

Our products do not contain hydrogenated fats. Hydrogenated fats are produced with an industrial process which, starting from oils, applies temperature conditions in the presence of hydrogen such as to modify the chemical structure of some fatty acids and thus give rise to solid fats with a high content of fatty acids in the so-called form TRANS.

These are harmful, because they cause an increase in LDL cholesterol (the harmful one, which causes atherosclerotic plaque) and a reduction in HDL cholesterol (the beneficial one, which takes cholesterol away from the arteries).
